A Systemic Architecture for Strategic Positioning in Complex Decision Environments
Strategic positioning is commonly theorized as a problem of signal emission: actors communicate value and receptor systems evaluate what they receive. This framing locates the decisive mechanism too late in the process. In consequential decision environments, the central problem is not only what actors emit but what occurs inside the receptor system after a signal arrives: how value is interpreted, classified, stored in operative memory, and retrieved when a decision window opens.
Drawing on cybernetic theory (Wiener, Beer), predictive processing (Friston, Clark), organizational sensemaking (Weick), signaling theory (Spence) and bounded rationality (Simon), the research develops a systemic architecture organized around five interdependent variables operating on a common substrate: operative memory.
- Interpretation: How the receptor system reads the actor before deliberate signals are processed. It is about redesigning the contextual, symbolic, relational, and institutional signals that activate a different frame before the actor even speaks.
- Legitimacy: The structure of ecosystemic signals validating the actor's right to occupy a position, rather than self-declared claims.
- Eligibility: The indexing problem of ensuring an actor is stored in operative memory under the category that decision-makers will actually query when a decision window opens.
- Centrality: Moving beyond being an option to becoming the anchor or reference point that defines the category and against which others are evaluated.
- Activation: The moment when the decision system retrieves the actor from operative memory and converts that retrieval into behavior: a call, an invitation, or a selection.
It resides in how the system interprets it.
